Why You MUST Try Native American Cuisine | AJ+

Native American cuisine is America’s original food, dating back some 10,000 years. So why don’t we see Native restaurants on every street corner in the U.S.? In this James Beard-nominated episode, Yara goes on a road trip through the American Southwest to find out.

Hey everyone! Thanks for watching our latest episode – I’ll try to jump in the comments and respond when I can! (And let me know what you think if you manage to find a Native American restaurant, run by members of the Native community, near where you live!)

Also, as we work on more episodes of In Real Life, we thought we’d reach out to you all for some tips. Do you have an idea for a future episode? Feel free to pitch it in the Google form below:

I can't believe I lived close to Denver and never knew about Tocabe?!!

When I look at the histories of indigenous peoples around the globe, it's really amazing anything is left of their cultures. I have so much respect for those who are making the effort to celebrate and preserve them (and inform the ignorant such as myself).

I love these foods! Many dishes remind me of how my family cooked in Mexico and it feels kinda related: the corn husk (tamales), the clay (pottery/barbacoa, birria), the ingredients (beans corn etc) and even the burnt cedar mixed with blue corn (reminds me of nixtamal process)

I love the blunt honesty about native history. The trail of tears is one of the most brutal atrocities in the history of the US and many people don’t know this

I disagree that chilies were only found in American continent, there might be a certain variety that is popular today that might have origins on the continent but not all chilies

The great genocide of native Americans gets overlooked so much and to think of what politicians, Trump, want to do with the remaining lands of the nations.

I got to experience a buffet of ojibwe foods and everything was delicious. Considering that people nowadays want to eat healthier and most of their dishes are pretty nutritionally dense, I bet they'd make a killing selling their food in major cities.

I am actually learning about Native American culture through college and apparently, for anyone curious, the reason Native American cuisine isn't shared outside of communities or the home is because they don't believe in selling their food. Food is seen as a gift within the communities that is given freely to friends and family, so that is why usually there are no Native American restaurants, even on reservations.

Appreciate Video clip! Sorry for the intrusion, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you thought about – Rozardner Delicious Dishes Reality (google it)? It is a smashing exclusive guide for stockpiling food for an emergency minus the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my m8 got excellent success with it.
