The Man Who Relives Slave History Through Food (HBO)

DESCRIPTION

Culinary historian Michael Twitty has made a name for himself touring the country to lecture about southern food traditions. His new book, ‘The Cooking Gene,’ is out today. The book explores the history of cuisine in the American south, by focusing on the people who laid the foundation for it — enslaved Africans. Twitty is currently on a teaching residency in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. VICE New’s Dexter Thomas joined him there for a meal.

For a guy rocking a high top fade trying to be “retro” he acts like he’s too good to experience colonialism and embrace things like working with your hands and preparing tour own food. You can’t pick and choose which era you want to acknowledge and what you don’t. You’re here because your ancestors SURVIVED those times and made it through so you could choose. Ugh, besides the reporter this is such an interesting topic and I wish they spent more time on it and the chefs insight.

I just want to say that Dexter, the journalist is rightfully uncomfortable. He has every reason to interrogate this process. I believe he's seeing this process from a different place. He & many of us have only been taught to look at this tulmultuous time in our history, slavery, with disdain, shame, & anger. So to now see someone embodying this with a spirit of pride, respect & reverance, it's jarring! It's uncomfortable to confront those realities as a Black American person and I'm very proud to see that he did it. I'm proud that Michael took the time to push him past those feelings & educate him with love! ??

The reporter is unlikeable and has many flaws, but his hair bugs me the most.

And before y'all accuse me of being negative, Mr. Twitty seems like a kind, sensible person and probably, a great chef.

Last I checked Democrats haven’t done sh*t for black people recently either. Both parties suck so the quip about how surprising it was to see a Conservative white person interested in the culinary history of the slave community seems misguided. The majority of those “white conservatives” are patriotic history lovers who want to respectfully remember and educate themselves about the best and worst times in our history. Are there bad Conservatives? Duh, of course. Just like Democrats; they have their own bad actors who are going around tearing down historical statues and burning cities. That doesn’t mean I would be surprised to encounter a patriotic Democrat and it’s not surprising to encounter a sincere Republican who is interested in the content of this video. Stop judging entire groups for the actions of a few; haven’t we learned that by now? Good grief.

This I truly loved watching and if this Gentleman ever got his own cooking show I'd encourage him to call it SAVORY CUISINE. With all those spices and homegrown vegetables man he'd make a good presentation of PLANTation.
